[1] Stray Cat Strut, Stray Cats
~
I don't bother chasing mice around,
I slink down the alley looking for a fight,
Howling to the moonlight on a hot summer night!
Singin' the blues while the lady cats cry,
"Wild stray cat, you're a real gone guy."
~
Starting us off is the Stray Cats, who've got this little ditty that sort of oozes Owen's bar-hopping, womanizing demeanor. The guy's smooth, even during tussles with boyfriends of girls he's flirting with, and while he might not be traditionally attractive (like some Torchwood operatives), he's obviously got some kind of pull that makes girls want to hook up with him. After all, he is quite the ladies man.
~I wish I could be as carefree and wild, but I got cat class and I got cat style...~
[2] Tubthumping, Chumbawamba
~
He drinks a Whiskey drink, he drinks a Vodka drink;
He drinks a Lager drink, he drinks a Cider drink;
He sings the songs that remind him of the good times;
He sings the songs that remind him of the better time.
~
Nothing like a good old fashioned song about binge drinking and the gritty determination of an alcoholic who isn't an alcoholic. If anything, this song is perfect for Owen just on the fact that it's blindingly obnoxious, and yet you probably know all the lyrics and have enjoyed the damned song at least once in your life.
~I get knocked down, but I get up again! You nay ever gonna keep me down...~
[3] If I Ever Feel Better, Phoenix
~
They say love ain't nothing but a sore,
I don't even know what love is -
Too many tears have had to fall,
Don't you know I'm so tired of it all?
I have known terror dizzy spells,
Finding out the secrets words won't tell.
Whatever it is it can't be named,
There's a part of my world that' s fading away.
~
Despite the upbeat tempo, there are some unhappy, almost resigned lyrics to this song. It's an ode to Torchwood and past loves, really. Torchwood is one of the best and worst things that could have happened to Owen; on the one hand, it gave him meaning after his fiance's death, gave him something to do, a way to try and make a difference in the world; on the other hand, it's the reason why he lost both his fiance and Diane, and... well, every woman in his life, really. He can't have a serious relationship after Diane because none of the people he might meet could even begin to comprehend Torchwood, and he's oblivious to Tosh's affection.
~Now I know there's much more dignity in defeat than in the brightest victory; I'm losing my balance on the tight rope -tell me please, tell me please, tell me please...~
[4] Wrecking Ball, Creeper Lagoon
~
Hey, I'm coming down like a wrecking ball,
Breaking her heart -
Like a plane that's coming down,
Like a wrecking ball falling apart,
Every day I always come to find
Everyone's dumb and blind,
I say just fuck it all,
I know it's fearless, heartless, careless.
~
More of an Owen/Tosh song, but it works in the general theme of "every relationship Owen has ends badly." Which is the theme of Owen's life. There's also a hint of egotism in the lyrics, which nobody can deny is part of Owen's life.
~I got to hold you, but you break; please just let it out. Every day I'm away, stumbling for what to say...~
[5] The Fear, Lily Allen
~
I don't know what's right and what's real, anymore,
And I don't know how I'm meant to feel anymore,
And when do you think it will all become clear?
'Cos I'm being taken over by the Fear.
Life's about film stars and less about mothers,
It's all about fast cars and cussing each other,
But it doesn't matter cause I'm packing plastic,
And that's what makes my life so fucking fantastic.
~
One of the first songs I ever associated with Owen was this one by Lily Allen. If Owen is ever hit by a genderswap virus, I can assure you he will be Lily Allen incarnate. The sense of disillusionment in this song is particularly fitting for Owen, especially when you think about his life being one big blur of bad events, some caused by him, some not. There's again that sense of egotism here, which is one of Owen's major flaws.
~Forget about guns and forget ammunition, 'cos I'm killing them all on my own little mission - now I'm not a saint, but I'm not a sinner...~
[6] Xtatic Truth, Crystal Fighters
~
We were born to be alone,
Everybody all alone,
Born alone to be alone,
We'll stand alone forever.
Standing on the world alone,
Learning how to stand alone,
And always to be alone,
We'll be alone forever.
~
The song from which the title of this FST. It sums up the general lethargic hopelessness that Owen seems to adopt after Diane's departure. It's all about the fact that everyone's alone; nobody has anybody, not really, and Owen is resigned to that fact.
~There's nothing left here to worry about; we're on the ground, we're in the clouds, the world is spinning around...~
[7] Alouette!, Tallest Trees
~
And when I was a boy, I'd often dream that I was flying,
Only short distances and barely inches from the ground -
I thought if I could go higher then I could travel farther,
The more I'd concentrate, I'd find the less I could remember.
~
A more hopeful song, maybe, but more than anything, the lyrics hint at fear underneath that "I can do anything" attitude. And the farther he tries to fly, the less there is that makes sense - the more he tries to run, the less things work out for him.
~Then there comes a creeping fear: I am no hero...~
[8] Beloved, April Smith & The Great Picture Show
~
You were the thrill that stilled my beating heart, baby,
You are the one I'll dream the most,
But if i cannot have the real thing,
I'll gladly settle for your ghost.
And you can haunt these halls
All you want,
And if I ever leave,
I will take you with me.
~
A song for Diane.
~Well they say to say goodbye, but I'd surely rather die from my broken heart...~
[9] St. Ides Heaven, Elliott Smith
~
Everything is exactly right,
When I walk around here drunk every night.
With an open container from 7-11,
In St. Ides Heaven;
I've been out haunting the neighborhood,
And everybody can see I'm no good,
When I'm walking out between parked cars
With my head full of stars.
~
There have probably been plenty of times where Owen found himself stumbling about Cardiff, drunk and knowing full well that he looked like any other vagrant on the street. This song's lack of real remorse for that situation fits Owen well. There's also that pervading sense of loneliness - he won't come down for anyone.
~The moon is a lightbulb breaking - it'll go around with anyone, but it won't come down for anyone, and I won't come down for anyone...~
[10] To Go Home, M. Ward
~
I'll be true to you,
Oh yeah, you know I will,
I'll be true to you forever or until
I go home.
God, it's great to be alive,
Takes the skin right off my hide,
To think I'll have to give it all up someday.
~
Despite the upbeat nature of this particular song, it's definitely more depressing. It's almost, almost, about living in the moment, but there's that sense of foreboding - one day, all of this will be gone, and Owen knows that it'll be Torchwood that kills him. And there's that sense that nothing lasts, especially with women.
~And if I ever treated you mean, you know that it was only because I'm sorry I couldn't have you for my own...~
[11] Honestly, Cary Brothers
~
Think I'm goin' home,
I think I'm gettin' lost for a while;
Tired of getting stoned,
And thinkin' about you in the night.
So I'll file away all my dreams,
Though I still believe in everything;
I wished your love away.
~
Another song for lost loves, especially Diane. He tries to drink and screw his emotions away, but it doesn't matter; they stay with him, no matter how hard he tries to pretend that he's over it, that he's better now and he can do anything. Owen's a tragic kind of guy.
~Lookin' for some hope - polished off the whiskey tonight. You turned a man to stone for lookin' at you straight in the eyes...~
[BONUS] Break Your Heart, Taio Cruz
~
Now listen to me baby,
Before I love and leave you,
They call me heart breaker,
I don't wanna deceive you.
If you fall for me,
I'm not easy to please,
I'mma tear you apart,
Told you from the start, baby from the start.
~
JUST AS A BONUS BECAUSE WHO CAN GO WRONG WITH TAIO CRUZ. YOU MIGHT SAY THIS IS LUDACRIS, BUT TAIO CRUZ TELL US HOW YOU FEEL!
